United States: rape statistics

The National College Women Sexual Victimization Study estimated that between 1 in 4 and 1 in 5 college women experienced completed or attempted rape during their college years (Fisher, Cullen, and Turner 2000). According to RAINN every two and a half minutes, somewhere in America, someone is sexually assaulted. There is a huge problem with under reporting of this crime. The National Women’s Study found that 84% of women did not report their rapes to police (Kilpatrick, Edmunds, and Seymour 1992). More rape crisis statistics can be found from RCIP, the FBI and the Bureau of Justice as well as the CDC and RAINN(who cites those resources).
