Katie Roiphe

Katie Roiphe is the author of the non-fiction works The Morning After: Fear, Sex and Feminism (1994) and Last night in paradise: sex and morals at the century's end (1997). Her novel Still She Haunts Me is an empathetic imagining of the relationship between Charles Dodgson (known as Lewis Carroll) and Alice Liddell, often claimed as the real-life model for Dodgson's Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland . She holds a Ph.D in English Literature from Princeton, and is presently teaching at New York University.

Roiphe's book The Morning After argued that many incidents of date rape are at least as much the woman's fault as the man's. Critics of the book have called her a denier or even apologist for date rape.

Quotes

  • "This book would have benefited enormously from a healthy dose of statistical information. Roiphe writes about sex education, the abstinence movement, and the relative risk of different sexual practices. But she never endeavors to clarify the issues by actually resorting to reliable statistics." Stacey Richter
  • "I read that book by Katie Roiphe, when i was trying to find some sort of understanding about what happened to me. It was the one of the worst invalidations of my experience. I still think about that book sometimes, use Roiphe's words to insult and invalidate myself." Anonymous survivor
  • "But Roiphe's shrewd observations have an ugly undercurrent. At one point she suggests that accounts of rape given at the marches may be fabricated or embellished: 'The line between fact and fiction is a delicate one when it comes to survivor stories,' she writes. 'It's impossible to tell how many of these stories are authentic, faithful accounts of what actually happened. They all sound tinny, staged.' Her insinuation is a cheap shot, unprovable and callous." M. Emory from TIME
